The curiosity of The Lighthouse aside, I really can't get into Robert Eggers films. Whilst my friend was basking in the murky gothic atmosphere, I was just bored. The choice of the camera moves and the sound design & score were all appreciated, but that's as far as it goes for me. Which is a shame because I enjoyed most of it until Orlok left the castle. It just seemed to drag beyond that point.

Surprisingly decent. Although it didn’t persevere once the big FX came in, really appreciated the effort to use 90s camera moves, and shoot on film. A cut above the current Saturday night fare.

The best performance? Basil Exposition 9/10ths of the way through. You know you’re fucked when the compromised big bad has to poorly explain the entirety of what you’ve just watched.
It’s utterly nonsensical. A film truly lost in the edit and probably ill-conceived on the shoot. Throwing everything at the dartboard never works. Not a sliver of this stands up to a modicum of scrutiny.

So bad it makes you question the goodwill generated by his previous film.

    Holy plots Batman!

Of course there was zero chance I was going to like a ZS film, but when he was named as DoP in the opening credits I knew there was an utter car crash on the way.

So it’s a $70million film shot wide open on the lens (which has no narrative relevance), like a student’s first work. All that great 1999 CGI constantly out of focus, as are the cast. I couldn’t watch it in one sitting as the thing is bloated to 2.5 hours by awkward emotional convos every 15 mins.

This is lazy, pompous & fucking terrible film making.
