Nickel Boys 2024
This is a very ambitious film of a book that I love, and I wanted to love the movie. The story is both powerful and important, and the director did a great job of making me feel uncomfortable. Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor’s performance was amazing. And the directorial choices about what to show and not show were inspired.
For me, however, the use of the first person perspective was frequently distracting. Not all the performances worked for me. And if I had not read the book, I think I would’ve found this movie difficult to follow.

The Iron Claw 2023
This movie was a mixed bag. The story itself is heartbreaking, and the emotional tug is significant. Maura Tierny’s understated performance was a sight to behold. I wanted more of her. The physicality of the performances and the actors’ transformation was also impressive. In the end, however, I wanted more. More depth. More exploration. More back story. More viewpoints.
