  Impressively rich for a relatively short run time, mulling on honor, sexuality, tradition, stoicism, all of which under a deeply masculine umbrella here. Whether you will criticize or idolize the perfectly stoic Kokubu will depend on the person watching, but either way it tells us that we should try harder to break through and understand those with thick shells.   I don't really understand why everyone likes this one more. I think it looks better, but other than that everything is less interesting and it's more bloated without actually evolving the premise in any way. I feel like it could've been an hour shorter...

  Usually something this absurd and bonkers as this will wear thin on its gimmick, especially if it's going to last 4 hours, but somehow this always manages to be surprising and engaging and I never lost interest even if I liked some parts more than others. Undoubtedly one of the most hilarious movies I've ever seen, and it still manages to be compelling and thoughtful when it needs to, being about far darker themes than I expected. I do think it may have been too absurd for me to fully get behind its more emotional moments, but maybe on rewatch it'll all fully click.
