I think the real genius in this movie’s storytelling (outside of the cinematography) is revealed in the shot where the Captain cannot see the faun. I see two main interpretations for this; that he didn’t see the faun because he (and adults in general) grew out of his belief for the magical and fairytale, or that it was because Ofelia was dreaming all of this up out of distress given her situation.
