There’s a scene near the end of this film where the elder women gather in the pantry to acknowledge the victimization of their daughters. It is equal parts a moment of recognition for the pain these women face and an attempt to discipline their expression of it. After so much socially mediated weeping, finally an authentic expression of sorrow and love. But what is this catharsis serving without solidarity? It’s a gesture of consolation for the fact that the status quo must remain intact. I was shot through the heart by this film.
