I went into the cinema expecting another rendition of the same cliche we have all seen a hundred times: quirky, awkward boy meets eccentric girl and they fall in love and she dies (of cancer, surprise surprise) but, fear not!, he has grown so much and is now a better, more confident and well-rounded man. This was all given away by the trailer, by the way.

And, although the storyline definitely falls into this over done narrative, I will say…

completely empty and completely overwhelmed after finishing this film. perfect from start to finish. if i don’t fall in love like they do, i don’t want it.

the more i think about this film the more complex it gets. it was, undoubtedly, a fantastic film. so beautiful, a great script, PHENOMENAL acting. it just left me feeling so empty - it took me so long to process it all and talk about it afterwards. my poor, sweet anora. how could we have laughed at her situation? why were we almost encouraged to - until the last five minutes of the film at least. i’m not sure. i need to rewatch it. i’m also curious about what may have been different about the film if it had been written and directed by a woman.
