Simmering and colliding like gas molecules in a pan of water heating on a hob, Oppenheimer’s potential soars with a strong middle act before imploding, culminating in an explosion that ultimately left feelings of being underwhelmed. Cillian Murphy stars as J. Robert Oppenheimer, often referred to as the “father of the atomic bomb”, in this biographical, political drama which weaves complex narrative threads (proven in Nolan’s choice for multiple flashbacks) which mirrors its subject matter.

This film is quite eccentric to say the least but I thoroughly enjoyed the mundanity of the lives of the characters. Every part of each scene was carefully constructed by Andersson, and the acting was top notch which created a film that all in all, not a lot happens in, but which is very philosophical. The mundane colour scheme (which could be also its Scandinavian style), the repetition of lots of dialogue mixed with the simplistic camera work crafts an image of monotonous continuity in the lives of the protagonists which could be the central message of the film - avoid monotony.

Unfortunately after reading all the praising reviews of this film I couldn't align with them, or anywhere close. It is quite possible I missed the point of this film, it is quite possible I am not a fan of character studies. Maybe I needed to watch this film with my character study hat on so to speak, but for me, that is 1 hours 40 minutes of my life I would ask back if I could.

Lynch continues to be in my eyes a master of mystery and suspense. A fantastic well chosen soundtrack and a neo-noir feel which has made me realise that it is a genre I want to explore more of. Lost Highway is an engaging film throughout which features some memorable scenes that are well crafted. I am looking forward to exploring more of Lynch's works.
