80s PG movies were a different breed entirely. My youngest clicked on Gremlins—and dang!! I almost missed out on this masterpiece. Gremlins drinking, smoking, and unleashing unhinged chaos. It’s interesting to see how much Spielberg’s filmmaking style influenced other filmmakers’ storytelling. Moral of the story: No food after midnight, no water, and let someone know before going down the chimney dressed as Santa.
Watched North by Northwest in 70mm . There’s something magical about seeing a Hitchcock masterpiece on the big screen. Cary Grant effortlessly oozes charisma. Eva Marie Saint is both charming and sharp, while James Mason channels a perfect mix of slippery menace and cool detachment.
Nestled between Vertigo—one of the greatest films ever made—and Psycho, which would go on to redefine horror, Hitchcock crafted a glamorous, high-octane blockbuster- the DNA for James Bond and countless Hollywood tentpole films to come. Bernard Hermann’s sweeping score for this Hitchcock film has the same effect as the best of Spielberg and Williams collaborations.
