One thing that really struck me was the notion of compassion that’s very much lacking in the environment of these characters and even within the characters themselves. A lot of the times everyone has different priorities, different values, different perspective of what’s ‘right’ (which is tied to convenience, the inability to say ‘I was wrong’, making assumptions about another person, feeling misunderstood etc.) There were a lot of moments that I felt really frustrated, but objectively there are always reasons…
My favourite part of it was the use of different languages and how the sounds of each language really fascinate me. It’s an interesting sensorial experience where it’s kinda unique to you depending on what languages you know.
It’s also interesting how a voice becomes a character especially with Kafuku’s wife’s recordings of the lines of the play. It’s similar to Spike Jonze’s ‘Her’ in that sense, but we actually have seen Oto’s face.
Really dig the score too.
