As a big fan of gothic horror, I've been looking forward to watching this movie for quite a while. And I can say, I am very appreciative that Eggers' embraced what defines the genre.

From the way the dialogue is spoken, to the tropes that might seem cliche. I'm glad that Eggers' did not try to modernize it or add a spin to it, because in this context these very cliches work *because* they belong.

Also just a big fan of vampirism and it's representation of all that was repressed in puritanical culture in general.

Beautifully encapsulates that subtle shift in a conversation, when you notice that you are not safe around a man.

Story wise very well done and in great contrast to most other true crime media that feels exploitative and like a fetishization of suffering.

Hair & Make-up team need to be jailed though. Don't get me wrong it looked pretty, but pretty for today. It did not even slightly encapsulate the period.

The first 75% of the movie were stellar - genuinely almost 5 stars. Great cast, soundesign, cinematography and everything. Some of the scenes that hit hardest for me were not even the body horror ones, but the ones that felt so intimately relatable in a way that almost leaves you ashamed.

The ending however just did not work. It felt campy but not in the right way. It's a pity because it takes away from the overall expirience.

    Also I…

I don't know how i managed to avoid spoilers for this long, but even if I had encountered any it wouldn't have made a difference. The plot was so easily seen through and predictable that it became boring and felt too stretched out.

Bonus star for the Venetia blood scene and the Farleigh bed scene, those were a saving grace.
