I saw Shampoo when it was released in 1975 and I still feel pretty much the same way about it as I did then. While there are some great supporting performances, this is not the stuff of existential angst, let alone tragedy. Warren Beatty’s Beverly Hills Casanova is really just too stupid and vacuous to evoke any sort of emotional response when he finally gets his comeuppance. I’ve never been a huge fan of his because you can ALWAYS see him…

Such a Pretty Little Beach 1949
What a great little gem! A moody and atmospheric noir (that’s kind of a joke - it rains ALL the time in this French seaside town) that turns out to be more of an examination of how life throws deadly curve balls to already damaged people. If you turned off the sound and didn’t hear French, you might assume you’re watching an early Bergman. But don’t do that because it also has a lovely score.

Burden of Dreams 1982
It’s hard to separate this film from the film it depicts. Perhaps it deserves 5 stars but its subject is so disgusting - the filming of the story of a megalomaniac exploiting the native population and their environs and, in the process of filming, doing exactly the same thing - that I can’t bear to give it any more. What’s the difference between a 1900 asshole raping for rubber and a 1980 director doing basically the same in the name of a “dream”?
