Unbelievable display of survival and madness, tied around an artistic theme - really making you question whether you would be any more capable in the same situation. It was a big long and felt stretched at times, but Dafoe is always sensational at playing these sort of characters. The length of some of the shots without music or effects, conveyed so much mundanity and hopelessness which was quite something, but it sometimes felt overwhelming to watch.

The star power is just mind boggling and the film really captured the tension of the moment for some of the less established stars, especially through Huey Lewis, as well as for Quincy who was trying to bring everyone together. The depiction of life in the south sitting the 40s feels so detached from the global events of the time - rly makes you think about how secluded the worlds of the older generation were. The development of celie’s character and confidence whilst being exposed to the other female characters coming and going from her world, plus the effects of her trauma coming through in so many parts of her behaviour were communicated so beautifully. It makes so much sense how Oprah and whoopi became megastars after this movie - fantastic job.

Beautiful slice of life style film, capturing the subtleties of daily interactions and explores family and the roles of a father/daughter very uniquely. The backdrop of early 90s Taipei and the shooting style made it feel so intimate to the audience and nostalgic. Great bit of comedy as well, and the cooking scenes were so amazing.
