What is it about this movie that fails to leave an impression on me, even though I always enjoy it quite a lot while I’m actually watching it?

Guillermo del Toro's Pinocchio 2022
I’m gonna be honest, I was disappointed by this movie in almost exactly the same way and for almost exactly the same reasons as Wendell & Wild, with the added disappointments that I expect more from Del Toro than I do Peele and Pinocchio is not an original story the way W&W is and therefore should not have stumbled as much as it did. Total disappointment on every level except visually (also the case with W&W).

Puss in Boots: The Last Wish 2022
I know everyone and their dog has been raving about this movie, and you’ve probably already seen enough memes and gifs and video clips and twitter film analysis breakdowns to get a feel for whether or not this movie will appeal to you, so I’ll be really brief. This is, in my experience, more or less as good as this sort of movie can get. It effortlessly justifies its own existence in a media landscape oversaturated with family-friendly animated films, and completely earns its adoring reputation from artists and regular filmgoers alike. It will be cited positively for decades to come. Go and watch it!

The Lighthouse 2019
A movie about folksy, turn-of-the-century sailor gibberish and latent homosexuality. I really liked this one, even though it was at times as bit fucking weird. It’s basically just two hours of Robert Pattinson and Willem DaFoe slowly going mad and yelling at each other in monochrome, and if that sounds interesting to you it can’t possibly hurt to watch. This felt a bit like the cinema equivalent of a retro indie game, a piece of media that adopts the aesthetics and design principles of an older era without forgetting what we’ve learned about good cinema since those aesthetics were commonplace.
