such a great movie, masterfully done! might be one of my favorites from modern russian cinema. although i found the sound design hideous (couldn't hear anything really), the other aspects were perfection! and i was surprised to find out that a lot of viewers criticize balagov for the use of snuff film, because to me it felt very correct. chechen wars are not being discussed enough in russia and there is still an unresolved tension between different ethnic groups, so "closeness" to me seemed like a good attempt to embrace this complex "taboo" topic.

i liked it at first: it's very "wes anderson"-coded, so cinematography is mostly mesmerizing. however, plotwise it didn't really fulfill any of my expectations. the first twenty minutes were good as the representation of the early soviet art and culture and its dubious nature. but then it fell flat really fast, probably because of those soulless empty characters. i guess there was an attempt to portray the main heroine as this cool legendary figure, who actually questions soviet ideology (?).…

was surprised to hear the line "Your wife has a lovely neck". i was familiar with it, because of the reference from death grips' song called "say hey kid" (such a great song!), and i knew that there they've cited some adaptation of "dracula". but the dots got connected only the moment i've stumbled across this scene. such a brilliant line actually, maybe i should get it tattoed

i’ve decided to watch this because of the hot lawyer, but it actually has much more to offer. loved the way they depicted trial, soundtrack is also great. overall such a masterfully done piece of art, i don’t have much to say about it, just loved every minute of it
