This was outrighht harmful. If it was trying to make some statement about masculinity, it's sorely lacking in its critique. I came in expecting to be disappointed by how it depicts women, but even the men were hollow. Everyone is a caricature: the nerd, the drunk, the sweetheart... It shows a lack of curiosity about the characters. They're only vehicles for gratuitous, senseless, underwhelming violence.

The Banshees of Inisherin 2022
This review may contain spoilers. I can handle the truth.
The concept is set up in the first 5 minutes like McDonagh said, and the rest of the movie is him challenging this by writing himself into a corner and trying to make it work, giving in to the absurdity but grounded enough and slow placed that it fits. He joked about Chekov's "donkey" in one interview, but every decision does feel deliberate. It doesn't matter whether it was before the fact or after.
It's hard to believe that the civil war was purely an aesthetic backdrop, but any allegorical reading of this falls apart. It works as a commentary on masculinity, however.

No Other Land 2024
...and I knew that I could never again raise my voice against the violence of the oppressed in the ghettos without having first spoken clearly to the greatest purveyor of violence in the world today...
Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. — Why I Oppose The War In Vietnam
It's frustrating how the actions of the oppressed class are scrutinized so harshly when they resist thir oppresors. Basel's father says he has to hold himself back from throwing rocks, but settlers have no problem gunning down the whole village. It makes me wonder how the documentary would have been received had it been... a little different.
