Slow to get going, but pays off in the climax. I’m off to karaoke to go sing THAT song… you know the one. With that sweet green icing flowing down.

Phantom of the Opera 1943
Sumptuous production, but pacing and emphasis on musical sequences make it a bit slow to modern sensibilities. A good watch on its own terms but more serious/less camp than other Universal Monster films.

Son of Frankenstein 1939
Come for Boris Karloff’s last film as the iconic monster. Stay for Bela Lugosi and Basil Rathbone’s charismatic performances, plus the fantastic minimalist lighting and production design. Not quite a classic, but a fun entry into the Universal Monsters canon.

The Invisible Woman 1940
Silly, but not scary or creepy, entry in the Universal Monster canon. Plenty of dated jokes and gags to keep modern viewers entertained. But a horror movie this is not, even by 1940 standards.
