The stupidity of war at its greatest. The inefficiency and cruelty of the military justice system in times of war. The necessity to find a culprit and to show « the example » even if it means that you will amputate your own side.
The biggest stupidity shown in the film: shooting an unconscious soldier.
The sad reality is that it happened too many times during WWI but the soldiers who were indicted were never proven innocents even after war.
