  Apparently the "softened" ending is believed to have been imposed in part by the studios or censors, who were concerned about the impact of such a radical and disturbing film for its time.
  That ending makes no sense because of Hans saying before "Tonight, you’re going to get your own medicine, darling."
  Fir me the film ends before that scene.
