Godzilla 1954
Uh, wow! MOMI presented these films in a very fun, eclectic order, so seeing this 5th in the weekend (and for the very first time) was jarring in a good way. It’s funny that the movies eventually got so wacky and fantastical when their source material is this towering, often sobering, disaster movie masterpiece. When the one lady is like “goddammit I barely survived Nagasaki as is” I was like, ack! It’s cool to realize in retrospect that Godzilla Minus One is most indebted to the OG film in the series.

Make Spider-Man broke again! No superhero movie since has made its hero take SO many Ls. It’s perfect. How shall I count the ways: Raimi going full on Evil Dead with the operating room freak out, down to the hand saw; the train fight; Molina’s theatre pedigree put to tremendous use; “Raindrops are Falling on my Head” and that freeze frame!!! But above all Raimi was smart enough to make the dramatic story (basically: Spider-Man can’t achieve work-life balance) just as engaging…
