No man enters the same river twice: for it is not the same river and he is not the same man. I saw this one after seeing the magical remake and couldn’t help but compare. If it had been the other order, would the ratings have switched? Interesting brain food.
Anyway I enjoyed this one even if it did show its age at some points and the performances/audio seemed a little wonky, the colorful sets and outfits and spectacle of it were an absolute blast. Aesthetic adventure!
Wow. What an experience! Must watch thought provoking absurdist black comedy/horror extravaganza. The deterioration of a marriage, with the emotions and experiences cranked up to 11. Cronenberg body horror meets Lynchian symbolism with a hefty dose of historical/religious/individual allegory. Not to mention insane Nicholas Cage tier batshittery of performances. Seen in theaters, in 3D for the 15th anniversary. I thought this was a fantastic scary movie for children - horror achieved without any of the horrible that comes into adult scary movies (gore, SA, etc). The themes of neglect and a search for belonging were poignant. The animation was beautifully crafted, and I was tremendously impressed with the 3D - normally something I consider gimmicky AT BEST but in this case a masterful addition to the aesthetic.
