Kinda reminded me of The Bell Jar a little bit, in terms of the setting and issues of the protagonist. I think Lisa’s character was definitely interesting as someone who took patients down with her. Also so many TikTok audios come from this movie: “everyone, everyone knows that he fucks you” - which is attached to a much more terrible scene than I could’ve ever imagined. I love Winona Ryder and I think her haircut is so good in this, but I think I would look like a 15 year old boy if I got it.
This movie was cute in some ways bc it was an early depiction of gay domestic relationships, but it definitely relied on a ton of stereotypes, kinda unsurprising bc it was made in 1996. I thought the son was an asshole and shouldn’t have made his family change their entire identity for his bigoted soon-to-be in-laws. Whatever happened to meeting somewhere in the middle? Maybe they think that’s what the big drag scene at the end represented. Cute set, lots of thongs, etc.
Late to the letterboxd party… but this was a really good and unique movie when it came out. Super exciting and very uncomfortable which is just how it’s intended. It’s like the name of the movie is what the audience is yelling at the screen the entire time. It’s a bit supernatural with the sunken place and all, but makes you think about the dangerous stereotypes, normalized and casual racism, and the lengths that rich white people will go to beat mortality.
Not the most creative film ever, but I always love when girls kiss even if it’s more for the male gaze… also some iconic scenes and lines in this one
