Solid performances led by Fassbender and Blanchett, sleek direction by Soderbergh and a witty script by Koepp. This is a vintage throwback to espionage thrillers from the 70s-90s and the kind of slick grownup fare we don’t get enough of anymore.
Naturally it’s not performing well at the box office.
This and NAKED LUNCH are Cronenberg’s two trippiest movies. Okay then there’s EXISTENZ which plays like VIDEODROME light. But this film, which I saw in the theater over 40 years ago, was way ahead of its time and holds up remarkably well, even prophetic in many ways. Somewhat ironic that home media became the only way to see the uncut version of the R-rated theatrical release. And shoutout to Howard Shore for his brilliantly malevolent score.
