    Soderbergh’s work-life, office-domestic, thriller-romance balancing act shows more of his hand than David Koepp’s in conception, throwing Fassbender in dark oversized frames and Blanchett in a (stunning) brunette wig resembling his and Jules Asner’s child-free (on a technicality) personal/professional partnership. Under the hood, the ruthless efficiency and commercial structure of Koepp’s pen is there, from a corny but pleasing prologue banter turning to visual grace note to he plot kicking into the third act at minute ~60 of 94.

    Lang gets a chance at the psychological western that Anthony Mann swiped from under him with Winchester ’73, although a less keen eye would notice games of chance on spinning wheels/fallen women hiding dashing criminals/recurrent balladry/garish technicolor and point to Johnny Guitar as an easier comparison.

    Some real choice stuff here — nobody would think to shoot a western brawl so tight besides Lang, the chronological slingshot from present to memory to a purgatorial standstill is so slickly executed you…
