I can now see why this film won multiple Academy Awards, especially best picture and best actress. It’s strange the range of emotions a film can put you through, with one moment you're dying laughing at Toros arguing with teenagers in a restaurant, and the next you find yourself sobbing as Ani breaks down in the car with Igor at the end.
I hope this doesn’t come off too blunt, but I don’t typically find myself “feeling” for certain characters…
Still one of my favorites but just doesn’t hit the same on rewatch
To start, if I could give a rating based purely on visuals it would easily be a 5 stars, but it is unfortunate the story felt lackluster. There are definitely some scenes that “get” you, but overall it didn’t really meet my expectations as a lot of people I saw raved about this and gave it 5 stars. I would give this a 3/5 but am giving it an extra half star as it was filmed partially in my former high school, specifically the same hallway I walked down to go to my film class which I thought was ironic.
I mean really what else can you expect from a Kubrick film. Between the cinematography, score, and overall direction from Kubrick's lead was fantastic, per usual. I don't believe I had ever seen Nicole Kidman in a major role before, and she performed incredibly well, and Tom Cruise was also magnificent in this as well.
