    ★★★

Rebel Ridge is a socially conscious action thriller directed with a sure hand by the always reliable Jeremy Saulnier. He knows how to hold the tension and not let it go.

It deals with police and institutional corruption and (not so) veiled systemic racism. It is over-expositive in parts, and the antagonists border on the caricature, but nonetheless, it is a gripping and satisfying watch.

Joaquin Phoenix is such a great actor. His silent expression itself is worth a thousand lines of dialogue.

Granted, the movie has a serious rhythm issue. It drags unnecessarily in several parts. The long-running length has no reason to be.

This is not a great movie, mind you, but it's way better than it's being made to be. It has Joaquin Phoenix, and the musical sequences are great and well-fitting to his mental illness.
