This film is a great case of good actors working with a poor script. Not only was it flat, it was predictable. In crafting the personal aspect of the story (Max/Frey) writers pulled from practically every easy cliche. The emotional lines didn’t hit at all; they felt forced and, again, predictable. And Kruger’s motive seemed to be vengeance for a damaged ego - I don’t know that any of the characters were actually truly motivated by the class disparity that is the backbone , the point, of the whole film.
