A relatively straightforward crime origin story, Goodfellas for "The Hustlers at Scores," if you will. But told with enough flourish and style to set it apart.
How you can tell writer-director Lorene Scafaria is a woman:
* The camera doesn't linger on women's bodies in an sexually objectifying way – I know that sounds crazy in a movie about strippers, but it true
* Emphasis on female friendships. The drama doesn't come from "I need to be better than you"…
underrated action comedy of 2018!! Honestly my biggest takeaway from this is that it actually showed healthy romantic relationships and people dealing with their problems as normal, sane adults and I was *into it*
it feels like this is trying to be 4 movies: an estranged family drama, Scottish tourism porn, a couple finding their way thru their fertility journey, and then lastly, a hallmark xmas movie. i didn't mind the first 3 parts as a combo, but the last genre felt the most hamfisted which is ironic considering this is, after all, a hallmark xmas movie.
they really thought the male lead(?) could get by on the charisma of having a scottish accent and fam, i do not think so
i still love this movie, but it's been a min since i rewatched, and i'm really struck by the caliber of romcom acting & writing on display here. the 3way call scene is so well done, among other htings. give kate winslet more comedies/romcoms!!!
and jude law really nails THE LOOK. no wonder the hold he had on the 2000s celeb gossip scene
I think I hyped up this movie too much for me to love it, alas. That being said it’s absolutely gorgeous in its production design and costuming/hair/etc and the store is beautiful. Definitely can see how it was an influence for Barbie.
