The cinematography alone merits 5 stars. And despite some rather shallow characterization of the protagonist, this movie was surprisingly not that shallow. Yes, the question of beauty can be quite trite when there are so many more pressing matters at hand. But when you look at this film as metaphor for Naples, for desire vs. sanctity, you get the start of a great conversation. Unfortunately, the film doesn't delve deeply enough in these discussions and the emotions are not as poignant as in Sorrentino's film The Great Beauty. But this film still keeps turning in my mind even over a week later.

I'm surprised by how many people on reddit missed the whole point of this film, which is simply: memory is a construct.

A Taxi Driver 2017

While this is a very entertaining film and helps bring awareness to an important part of South Korea's history, some directorial choices felt jarring in the context of a truly traumatic event. The action scenes (like the car chase) and slow-mo dramatic shots of the shootings felt like I was watching more of a titillating action film intended to pull heartstrings rather than a sincere dramatization of an uplifting story born from a real-life horror. I think there is a better way to balance sincerity and entertainment.
