  After watching for a second time, I am moved to consider this one of my favorite films. I applaud Schoenbrun’s decision for the ending. Not every life ends sweetly. Not every movie can end sweetly. Sure, from our POVs we feel it’s only obvious Owen go bury himself underground, but he—even in his newfound understanding of the world he’s been suffocating in—still faces doubt. Heteronormativity is a very powerful force. I can understand how even when shown evidence of his truth, Owen chooses not to follow it.
