  Coming in to this already having an established emotional connection to Leonard Bernstein the conductor, educator, and performer as a result of the countless hours of Bernstein Youtube videos I watched during my formative years as a teenager (he was a musical hero of mine, and still is), it was surprising that watching this movie I felt… nothing.

  The recreation of the legendary LSO Mahler 2 performance was neat. And Carey Mulligan was outstanding. But still not really sure about…

  To borrow from some of the dialogue in the film—

  Jean-Luc Godard, to me trying to unpack this: You try to understand me with words, and I look at you with feelings.
  
  Me: Understanding you is impossible. You never have ideas, only feelings.
  
  Godard: That’s not true! Feelings contain ideas!
