  Fans of Love and Rockets or Jarmusch or Chilean writers should appreciate this. Clearly an ode to Diaz, who I'd watch in a dozen more movies if she had made them. Naranjo is also fantastic. Plenty is said in the scenes where no one is talking.

  If you've watched a bunch of yakuza films that treat women as props, this is a potent corrective. Bleak overall and the pivotal sequence is absolutely gutting. The characterization is surprisingly nuanced, and while the film sticks to Yoshie's perspective, it offers sober depictions of the men in her life, each of whom is bound by his material circumstances. The callousness or horrific brutality of one man is nothing compared to the systems that subjugate them.
