Bram Stoker's Dracula 1992
An extremely imperfect movie, but I came out of it mostly feeling like it worked. This is most definitely a style-over-substance kind of film, with parts of the story leaning a bit—sometimes very much—into pure camp and melodrama.
That said, the filmmaking is genuinely impressive. The practical effects, props, and costume design are all top-notch. Much of the style is very expressionistic, tons of focus on the shadows, other-worldly dream-like visuals, and dramatic performances. The direction throughout the movie stays…Translated from by -
I Am Not Your Negro 2016
Notes while I was watching the doc:

Fallen Leaves 2023
Competently made but I got very little out of in the end. (I get more positive near the end.) This is my first Kaurismäki film and I've heard that his style of filmmaking is often intentionally dry and non-emotive and it certainly is that, though not without some dry humor to colour it up a bit.

The World's End 2013
lots of the standard Edgar Wright charm with this one of course, but the characters aren't as fun for the most part. It takes a while to get started as well and when it does, I don't think it manages to deliver a satisfying or interesting conclusion to the story. The initial part where the group finds out what they're dealing with is real fun, but I didn't find the rest of it nearly as fun.
Weakest of the trilogy, though I'll have to admit I don't love the other ones as much as a lot of other people do either.Translated from by
