I agree with the theory that the main character is an unreliable narrator he totally killed Haskell to rob him, then killed Vera to coverup the crime. Probably was originally hitchhiking to get out of town due to killing his fiance after finding out she was planning on leaving him. It is also incredibly ironic that in a case of real life imitating art the actor of this murderous main character Tom Neal later murdered his wife and claimed it was an accident.
