  a repetitive and one-note movie whose apparent tongue-in-cheek self-awareness as a fun clichéd buddy-crime film is undermined by how badly it also wants to be a safdie film. it can’t be both, and ends up neither. the complete lack of chemistry between Clooney and Pitt is so surprising and striking that one is tempted to entirely blame the script, but honestly I think they must have really phoned it in themselves too.

  1.5 stars just because something about it made it easy to watch and it didn’t actively make me mad. also Austin Abrams was great.

  a disturbing and atmospheric mystery film held back from greatness by a script that took too many shortcuts, especially in the back half. also needed either more nicolas cage or less nicolas cage. ended up being weirdly fun which was maybe not what it wanted.
