When Evil Lurks 2023
The atmosphere of dread and just pure stress throughout this was so palpable I genuinely felt nauseous even when there wasn't gore on screen.
The story itself isn't really anything to write home abt but it gets the job done, dark, cynical, hopeless, what you'd expect. But the atmosphere, interspersed with some of the most extreme violence I've seen in a film in a long time, is able to carry it.

The problem i have with most alien movies like this is that they explain or show too much, and stop being scary. This is not one of those movies.
The acting is nothing to write home about but the visual effects are fantastic and it maintains its atmosphere throughout. Its all played very calm which gives it this strange feeling of toeing the line between surreal and realism, with the story coming across in a simple yet vaguely abstract-feeling way.…

Even when a horror movie is bad it can kinda still get by if the kills are fun or goofy or have good effects. Even if you get everything else wrong. This had the most boring kills ever. How do you make a woman getting mauled by piranhas boring??
