Phenomenal commitment to the performances by all concerned, however the ending sells itself out of the promise of great drama that the movie spends two hours building.

Some of the wittiest private eye banter, ever and great nasty performances. Also some great set pieces and visual moments. Problem is the plot is needlessly difficult to follow and allows for too much tuning out.

Trouble in Paradise 1932
Was recently urged to watch this, and I can see why, although I found myself appreciating it more than loving it. Not a huge fan of drawing room comedies although I love the droll wit and the way Lubitsch champions the scoundrels. Perhaps most enlightening was Peter Bogdanovich's intro to the film, in which he wonders who were the audiences that made these smart films so popular back then, and why we don't have them anymore.
