The animation, of course, is superb. Most of it was your typical Ghibli scenes (beautiful nature, magical looking buildings, destruction and rubble, globby black figures and cute lil guys) but what was new was the way the opening scene was animated. Where the boy is running to the fire and the people and surroundings warp and twist as if in a dream but also as if representing the feeling of that moment/of experiencing a catastrophe.

When I was little I thought Till There Was You was a Beatles original song ‘cause that’s where I first heard it. I always thought it was one of the most beautiful songs I’ve ever heard, especially the lyrics. When I discovered a few years ago it came from The Music Man I had to watch it and wow - Shirley Jones’ version is even more spectacular and breathtaking. Brings tears to my eyes. One of my favorite movies!! So funny with reoccurring jokes throughout the film. Super progressive messages which is wild for it’s time (1959). It’s set in the prohibition era where two musicians witness a gang murder and run away by disguising as women. Marilyn Monroe is soo hot in this and the music is absolutely terrific.

Yikes. Did not enjoy watching it. I’ll be first to say I’m no sophisticated cinephile but some scenes I felt were there just to be weird/provocative and “make you feel something” when actually it doesn’t seem to add much substance to the main storyline. Like the rape scene in the 3rd part. There should be a trigger warning for SA survivors in the beginning of the movie.. I thought the first part was the most intriguing and had the best storyline. Hated the 2nd. 3rd was okay.
Does gore & nudity make a movie sophisticated?! Jeeeeez.
