The animation, of course, is superb. Most of it was your typical Ghibli scenes (beautiful nature, magical looking buildings, destruction and rubble, globby black figures and cute lil guys) but what was new was the way the opening scene was animated. Where the boy is running to the fire and the people and surroundings warp and twist as if in a dream but also as if representing the feeling of that moment/of experiencing a catastrophe.
