This short film is genuinely one of the best Star Wars projects of all time. As an homage to Akira Kurosawa and his filmmaking techniques, it captures the essence of movies like The Hidden Fortress and Seven Samurai — both of which were major inspirations for George Lucas. With a beautiful animation style and great visual storytelling, The Duel reunites Star Wars with its roots in a way that no other entry in the franchise has before.
This film was my introduction to speculative biology as a child, and after 20 years it still holds up as one of the best entries in the genre. As an adaptation of Wayne Barlowe's "Expedition," the film embraces the surreal beauty of its source material. Though not without some gaps in scientific plausibility, it still succeeds in presenting Darwin IV with an emphasis on the "biology" aspect of speculative biology.

- Steve Buscemi
A beautiful, kaleidoscopic musing on Hayao Miyazaki's life and career.
