I wish “Se7en” did not play for shock value. I’m guessing in 1995, the gruesomeness felt more important and original. Today, in a world of “Saw”s and other sick horror films, it just feels tired and unnecessary.
Kevin Spacey also makes the film feel dated. Although I guess this was the original Matt Damon in “Interstellar” uncredited late appearance.
Clearly a lot of movies owe a debt to “Se7en.” “Saw” 1-7(?) of course. And more recently “The Batman,” a movie…
