An exceptional film can make an extraordinary situation seem as relatable as the ordinary. While no one close to me has been taken hostage, tortured, and murdered by a totalitarian government, there are elements of grief that transcend circumstance.

It's impossible for me to write a Poor Things review and, first and foremost, not gush over Alasdair Gray. So much of what makes Poor Things (the film) great—the wit, the pastiche, Bella’s so-preposterous-but-also-so-human experiences—is rooted in Gray’s work.
