    (jo march voice) Women—

Seductive cinematography, perhaps one of the most visually mesmerizing films I’ve seen with its lush and jaded opulence. An unflinching and highly nuanced critique about the lives of prostitutes and the inherent complications of the trade. Deeply unsettling, a tinge surreal and yet oddly charming. In the face of horrific tragedies, the bonds of solidarity between the women are profound. The love was there, it didn’t change anything, but it was there.

I am kind of obsessed with Adèle Haenel’s creepy automaton impression. And Alice Barnole’s la femme qui rit.

adaptationally, it’s very mid and the pacing is bizarre but miss Thing perkins javert put his heart and pussy into this and really he’s the one we’re here to see.

ultimately suffers from stylistic indecision, never quite certain if it wants to be melodrama or if it wants to take itself seriously. at times it drew inspiration from the silent film era and then at times it seemed more reminiscent of 2010s children’s fantasy. lily-rose depp did not carry the role. overall the film felt held back. however the costume and set design was delightful. it’s not often that cinema boldly embraces the aesthetics of the late 1830s, but the silhouettes, the hairstyles and the motifs were endearingly Romantic. willem dafoe was a gem. more rats! more rats!
