    Talk to Me

    ★★★★½

Talk to me is stellar filmmaking; character led horror at its best. Its greatest success lies in the portrayal of its lead, whose complexity meaningfully illustrates its commentary of grief and addiction. There is not a poor performance to be had from the rest of the cast, who elevate an already strong and stylistic reinvention of paranormal horror to its full potential. Beautifully crafted in its brutality, Talk to Me is dense without being weighed down and fits gorgeously into the renaissance of modern horror.

  • Barbie

    Barbie

    ★★★★½

Barbie is decadent in its design, beautifully constructing its world through meticulously crafted sets, a charming referential wardrobe, and an impressive musical score. Aside from its visuals, Barbie succeeds in its message, as its ensemble cast (Margot Robbie & America Ferreira namely) center the film’s heart as a love letter to womanhood and the multitudes it contains. Some sequences are overly indulgent for its runtime and one would be forgiven for thinking the writing is occasionally on the nose for its target audience. However, Barbie is undeniable fun, masterful camp, and a testament to Greta Gerwig’s ability to not only craft a blockbuster, but a cultural phenomenon.

    The Blackening

    ★★★

The Blackening is sharp and well-written, laugh out loud funny at its best. Horror fans are likely to be disappointed in the films tonal balance, which largely embraces its comedy at the expense of its horror sensibilities (in which some potential is lost). In spite of this imbalance and issues with pacing towards its conclusion, The Blackening is well observed in its comedy, long overdue in its commentary, and joyful in its delivery making it well worth a watch for genre fans craving a laugh.

  • Evil Dead Rise

    Evil Dead Rise

    ★★★★

Evil Dead Rise delivers well on the precedent established by its franchise; unflinching gore, dark comedy, and an unforgettable third act bloodbath. Avoiding redundancy with its setting, set pieces, and performances, Rise pays homage to the films that came before it while keeping itself firmly rooted in the current sphere of horror. Alyssa Sutherland carries the film, captivating enough to cut through well balanced comedy and create sequences that are unsettling even for fans of the genre. Rise knows its audience, and caters to them lovingly.
