Few things in my weekly existence are as gratifying as watching a rich character driven movie with superb dialogue – Watching Armageddon was so worthwhile.
This was a much more than a save-the world-movie. The story arcs were typical, but backed by such strong dialogue it felt fresh. The father-daughter connection was the soul of the movie. The emotional payoff at the end was a real feel-good.
If I had a top five disaster movie list, this would be on it.
The opening scene did not disappoint. Bond verses 18 armed skiers, a snowmobile and an attack helicopter. Bonds escape started on skis – then brilliantly commandeered the enemy’s snow mobile – then finished by carving down the slope on a makeshift surf board to a beachboys soundtrack. The latter was the best part of the movie.
Roger Moore played Bond adequately, very cool and very smart. Zorin, the villain, was a normal mad industrialist, but not very exciting. His henchwoman,…
