Weekend 2011
A testament to how vital it is to see films, even “small” ones, on the big screen whenever possible- I’ve always thought Weekend was nearly perfect, save for one detail I thought didn’t make sense. I caught that detail I was missing in the background of an early scene this time, so I think this really is perfect.
A beautiful slice of intimacy and identity, and a look into what we choose to tell others, ourselves, and the world.

Dressed to Kill 1980
Psycho by way of Brian De Palma’s unbridled id. Many exceptionally-paced, beautifully-shot sequences in a very lumpy story.
And… yeah, the depiction of trans people is completely inaccurate but I honestly will give it credit for the ultimate message seeming to be that we should just let trans people be trans.
I hope Liz invested in Peter’s startup and they got rich together.

AIDS is treated as a punishment for sad white boys and their straight female friend. (Why is Jill such a big focus, anyway?) No characters feel connected or attached in any meaningful way, especially the peripheral London friends outside of the flat. Two gay men of color seem to live in this flat to fill some diversity slots while they cry over their sad white boy friends. (Roscoe’s storyline with his Nigerian father would have made a more interesting series.…
