Well this was a hell of a "first movie of 2019". An auspicious beginning, for sure. I'll take it. I loved and cringed through every part of this. Knowing it was written and directed by a women gave me the push to watch it and, for me, keeps it from being just yet another R&R movie. A truly ridiculous final shoot-out scene seals the deal. Also it is very French. I have no other way to explain that other than...French.
This review may contain spoilers. I can handle the truth.
Perfect perfection of a movie though I do demand justice for Jerome and the dog.
At least three times while watching this I turned to my movie partners and said "this is just so fucking French." It's not a BAD thing.
I missed out on this in theaters which I'm very bummed about now because man, I would have loved to see a wide variety of public reactions to this movie. I adored it, any heavy-handedness and all. It knew what it was about and committed. I think the pacing was perfect, and creepy and wonderful.
A true slumber party staple, I must have watched this at least 10 times the year it came out on DVD. This was my first return to it as an adult and while I still think the biggest thing that dates it is how much prestige professors get compared to 2017, it was still atmospheric enough to remind me why I would jump and get middle school horndog over the scandalous Harrison Ford sex scenes.
