I want to love this film, I really do. Technically it’s classically Hitchcockian and the plot is fab, but the misogyny is so pervasive in this one I just can’t get past it. I know, it’s the 40s. But the progression of Ingrid Bergman’s character from being a headstrong, self-assured woman to the stereotypical lovesick girl from every romantic thriller you’ve seen is so disappointing.
