Dev Patel director, Jordan Peele producer, me thinking how did it end up this bad then?
From Skins to cinemascreen you love to see it but my expectations were far too high for this bullet-time spiderman derivative. The hanuman imagery had the potential to redeem the film…and then he chucked the mask away at the first moment in the climactic fight…
It could have been great - the references, the camerawork, the iconography - instead I wish I’d watched John Wick and played Black Myth.

The way this film looks and sounds, its physicality, its use if light and dark - chiaroscuro, never heard of her but Eggers has.
Thinking on pre-modern apocalypse and the stories we tell ourselves to explain the evils of plagues; thinking on lust and manipulation for the good of one partnership and the defeat of another; thinking on this being a centuries old tale that I gave up on with Van Helsing in 2008…
I am very feel on the way home writing this, and I didn’t expect to be. My film of the year so far.

The boxing fan, the history student, the generally interested and, particularly, anyone who’s questioned who they are will be able to take something from this excellently (and expertly) told story on how Cassius Marcellus Clay found his name.
The narrative tracks his rise from an amateur fighter to heavyweight champion of the world through lenses of race, religion and relationships all while giving his prowess as a self-promoter and pugilist time to shine.

Hit Man 2023
You’ve got two attractive leads, a darkly whimsical premise and two attractive- ah, erm. No, that’s it.
I enjoyed Hit Man. It’s clunky, it’s unbelievable, its leads have moments of lip-biting. It’s meta, it’s twee, its two hour run-time was refreshing. It’s aware that it asks you to go with it, it’s easy to watch, its morality is loose, and, ultimately, that’s okay.
Well presented, often low key thrilling and over before you know it, if you like the idea of acting like the person you want to be, warts and all, you’ll get a kick from this for sure.
