Cuckoo 2024
Plucky, demented fun, Cuckoo is a tasty, original trifle. It does feel like the monster came first with the overall plot coming second, but this disturbed-protagonist-from-a-Todd-Haynes's-film…thing is just so memorable and unique of a design for a villain that I didn’t mind. Watcher 2022
Bad vibes, in a good way, the movie. While Watcher’s premise and script range from familiar to ok, the real joys come from its overall craft by director, Chloe Okuno, and a great, naturalistic performance from Maika Monroe. The Menu 2022
The Menu is one of those movies where I fundamentally appreciate its existence, in theaters no less. If I was a producer being pitched a social commentary infused black comedy with Ralph Fiennes as a crazy chef, I would probably say yes, but how many producers would really take such a gamble? Is this twisty combination of entertainingly and bleakly ironic scenes going to stick with me on a gut level? Probably not, but when I think back on The Menu,…
