Of course it's also about relating to one's self and the world, but the sister-sister relationship is one that I don't see explored in film that often. Having sisters, feeling alone, feeling terrified and exhausted. And the difference a home (with plants and color) makes.

I think we walk away from the theater so often (but also after reading some contemporary fiction) asking ourselves if the characters are dead or somehow conjured at the end, and then at the park directly afterward, the season and the lighting made everything look dreamlike. that is to say, unreal.

The two stars are for the acting, set design, and makeup/costume design. It's so apparent that the aesthetic vision for this film was stupendously coordinated and an immensely successful love letter to decades of childhood (and parental) nostalgia. A plus one to the nods to musical theater—in fact I'd say the theatricality of it, the times when the movie does not take itself or its _message_ so seriously, are when it shines.
