Such a good concept and I think the film went in the complete wrong direction with it - capped off with an underwhelming ending that doesn’t tie up any loose ends (in fact pretends they never happened). I think some of the acting performances saved this movie but I very seldom watch a film and afterwards decide I didn’t like it - unfortunately this is one of those occasions.

Unlike most American comedies, it leans into its uncomfortable and awkward energy. While at times it seems hopeless, the way it ties together at the end in such a wholesome way is what makes the film for me.

While for me, I think a rewatch is needed to understand all the nuances of Casablanca, this movie is paced so well you forget it was written in the 40s. Inter-spliced with too many famous quotes to count and a gripping plot on the fate not only of the protagonists but of the world changing around Casablanca, it is such an enjoyable viewing I am not surprised it is regularly regarded as one of the best.

The 2024 adaptation is an enjoyable watch. The music adds a different element. Renee Rapp was excellent to be expected. The Janis/Damian narration also added an interesting dynamic. However, compared to the 2004 film, it feels insincere and cut so many plot elements which made the characters feel like hollow stereotypes. The film lost its heart and lost its way - as a stand  alone film it would have been good, but it doesn’t do Mean Girls justice for me.
